Did you know there were prescription drug shortages? I did not know that there were a record number of shortages in 2010. And according to the FDA, these shortages are expected to continue in 2011. This is very scary with a reported 10,000 boomers turning 65 years old each and every day. Just yesterday the Washington Post carried a story detailing the shortage of drugs for certain conditions at hospitals.
This news comes on the heels of my having attended the screening of an independent film called Forks over Knives this past weekend at the 2nd annual Asbury Park IndieFest. The movie tells a compelling story of two doctor’s research and discovery that a whole food and plant based diet increases one’s longevity. This is the food as medicine argument and it’s hard to fight their findings. I left the theater totally recommitted to making adjustments to my personal diet.
I share this to encourage you to do what you can. Little by little, you can make adjustments to feel and look better. After all if there is going to be a continued prescription drug shortage, it’s advisable we start trying to reverse the aging process NOW and do what we can to heal our bodies with food. Start wherever you are.
Here are a few suggestions given by the panelist in no particular order that stuck with me.
- Eliminate 3 – 4 bad foods (you know what yours are) and replace these with vegetables
- Accept that relinquishing foods you love will mean there will be a grieving process
- If you cannot picture an ingredient on a label, don’t eat it
- Focus on 2 or 3 foods you like and find as many ways as you can to prepare them good
- And when it comes to suggestions that others give you, including me, remember that one person’s superfood is another’s poison
