Each time I visit Los Angeles, my eyes are drawn to all the the art in the streets. I am seduced by what Jeffrey Deitch calls arguably the most influential art since Pop, graffiti-as we know it today … ,
“both invented by teenagers. The convergence of street art and graffiti styles that emerged from housing projects, subway yards, and bleak suburban parking lots has become a global phenomenon. It continues to evolve forty years after its birth.”
Two of these three images were created by JR who was born in Paris in 1983. He describes himself as a photograffeur. And he has created full scale photos on large public surfaces from Paris to NY to the slums of Brazil and Los Angeles.
I do not see what he sees; but through his photography I can see what he captures.I am always looking for art in life. When someone can put their finger on an aspect of art in life, then share what they see, I think it’s pretty amazing. Sort of like reading a good book. Best thing is in downtown Los Angeles, you can do a walking tour for free, and see some of JR’s works up close. Is this real art to you?
