I am partial to historical documentation and this is a fictionalized retelling of a true story that takes place in the 6th century Byzantine empire.
Who doesn’t love a rags to riches story complete with love and drama, a female protagonist alone in the world, set on distant and completely unfamiliar shores. I am just getting over reading the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series (I was late to this party). And like that book, Theodora features a complicated female heroine like no one I have never met. I am carrying this book from room to room just as I did with that series.
I could not always discern the subtle religious arguments except in the broadest sense. There were clashes between those who believed only Christ was divine and those who believed the divine also existed within man.
