As a member of the ENMN Network I was not paid for this blog post but will receive a signed autograph and personal, heartfelt letter of gratitude. I think Sean’s mission is honorable and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Do you may remember ‘Rudy,’ from the Goonies, or Samwise Gamgee from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy? As a member of the Entertainment New Media Network, I waited in line with a group of bloggers to take this picture of Sean and me at the inaugural Entertainment New Media Conference. Sean was promoting a film project and he talked about a Kickstarter program that he’d launched a year ago to fund a lifelong dream. He wanted to create an environment where people with divergent viewpoints might come together in civil discourse. The Kickstarter campaign was a huge success resulting in a show called.VoxPopuli, a political radio program on TradioV.com. And I wanted to make sure you know that the 2nd season will launch on Saturday, May 1, 2014.
I have been a huge fan of Sean since both he and my son were adolescents. Yes I wanted the photo opportunity but I also wanted to ask him how he’d managed to survive Hollywood to become a a level-headed young man with a sense of family and concern for his country. I didn’t know at the time that Patty Duke and John Astin were his parents. But Sean gives all credit to his parents who insisted that he go to college and act.
Vox Populi is bringing back a fading tradition in our society and that is a tolerance for discussions around political world events. As a young person, getting to know who I was and what I believed included conversations around politics. Today that kind of engagement seems lost. Most discussions that include politics degenerate into name calling. Everyday citizens have learned not to discuss politics with anyone with whom they might find disagreement.
Sean felt this absence and wanted to create a place for nuanced discussion where citizens could look for help, for inspiration and cooperation. “We should look to each other. While there are many places and many sophisticated ways for people to relate to each other, there is a shortage of places to go where [….] can experience a fresh and nuanced discussion, “said Sean.
“Vox Populi is a dream of mine. I have a conviction that when people gather and communicate in a respectful manner, even with radically divergent viewpoints, beautiful things can happen,” said Sean.
Think of it as a place to learn from others, absent of judgment and ridicule. This is the mission of Vox Populi Radio.
