Monterey is host to a broad choice of hotels in a range of prices, from modest to luxury, all a short distance from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row, Monterey State Beaches, Monterey State Historic Park, and Old Fisherman’s Wharf. Interestingly, Monterey’s Custom House, dating to 1827 during California’s Mexican era, is the oldest standing public building in California. Historians report that the American flag was raised here claiming California for the United States in 1846.
The Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay
The Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay is a favorite for travelers because of its waterfront location within easy access to Carmel by the Sea, Big Sur, Carmel Valley and is just a 17 mile drive from the world-class Pebble Beach Golf Links. Eco-friendly hotel rooms are outfitted with hypoallergenic down pillow-top beds, a down duvet and pillows. There is a 24 hour fitness center, and a spa offering more than sixty treatments. Rooms range from $250-$400 per night and the hotel is pet-friendly.
The Monterey Hotel
In the center of historic downtown Monterey sits the beautiful Monterey Hotel in what many consider a premium location. The hotel is Victorian-inspired but the amenities are totally modern. Free WiFi and complimentary continental breakfast, premium bedding, cable TV and a great business center is what you can expect. Often there are Manager’s Specials making this a perfect premium destination for the budget seeker. As you might expect, this is a non-smoking hotel. A fitness center and spa are in the future plans. Right now only in-room massage is available.
Bay Park Hotel in Monterey
If affordability is tops on your list the Bay Park Hotel should be your first choice. Like the Portola Hotel Spa at Monterey Bay, the Bay Park Hotel is pet-friendly and hosts a designated area of relaxation for its pet guests. An outdoor heated pool and a fitness center await guests. And if after a long day guests choose to remain on the property, there is a onsite restaurant. Work can continue into the evening hours in the hotel’s business center. Rates average $150 per night and specials are frequent. Previous guests rate the hotel as very good, both for value and staffing.
Carmel Hill Del Monte Pines
Looking for a hotel near the airport? One of the best things about Carmel Hill Del Monte Pines is its central location and free on-site hotel parking that is also near the airport. Of course that is not all. WiFi is free as it breakfast even though this would be considered a reasonable. Prices have been known to go as low as $56 per night. Imagine a hotel at that price with a on site tennis court.
The Stevenson Monterey Hotel
This is another economical hotel to consider. Just seven minutes from the airport you’ll find The Stevenson Monterey Hotel in downtown Monterey in a perfect tourist location. First, it’s close to the beach, has free WiFi and offers a free continental breakfast. The outdoor pool, if you choose not to go to the beach, is seasonally heated. The hotel is great for either a romantic get-away or for a family traveling together. Ask for a room with a queen room with a sofa bed that can accommodate 3 or a room with 2 queen beds that could accommodate up to five, both offering excellent value.
