We met our guide outside the Istanbul Spice Market. First we sampled a food made from fish eggs, but I did not like it because it was very salty. It was like marzipan, except instead of super sweetness it had super saltiness. Then we tried some meat, cheese and bread. The bread was an original street food from Turkey…it was like a bagel covered in sesame seeds.
The next thing we did was visit one of the many spice shops. It seemed like they could make the spices taste like anything. Some were finely ground and others not so. At the market, we got to eat more delightful foods, but I am moving on. We went on a ferry to the Asian side of Turkey and I got to snack on sugar covered chickpeas. The ferry was like a bus on water and they served you tea.
We walked through another market and I saw all different types of cats. Istanbulians are cat people. Then we stopped at a store that sells honeycomb to eat. You chew on it to get out the honey then you spit out the wax and I got some for free! We stopped at a restaurant and ate lunch. They gave us a lot of food so I only ate a little bit of everything. My favorite dish was chicken, rice and raisins stuffed into a pastry shell. The weirdest food I ate was a dessert that was sticky and the main ingredient was chicken. Many desserts were made out of vegetables such as a jello made out of pumpkin and another made from a walnut shell.
I enjoyed this trip to the spice market because we got to eat cool and weird foods!
