I love to cook, grow food in my garden, and talk recipes with my online cookbook club members. In truth, I fancy myself an amateur Culinary Master Chef. You notice “amateur” is not bolded so you know I know my place. But you can you also imagine how happy I was to get this sponsored opportunity to shop in the Home Department of Macy’s Herald Square and to write about it.
Macy’s Culinary Council 10th Anniversary will take place on October 15th. Anyone who shops in the Macy’s Herald Square Home Department from Oct 9th through October 15th, and spends at least $100 will receive a $20 Macy’s gift card, a special Culinary Council 10th Anniversary recipe booklet; and two tickets to attend the actual Macy’s Culinary Council 10th Anniversary Party. I will be there.
It will be a great opportunity to meet and sample the food of master chef superstars with names many of us have come to recognize even if we haven’t eaten their food. The event will feature Todd English, Marc Forgione, Nancy Silverton, Marcus Samuelsson, Ming Tsai, Takashi Yagihashi, Johnny Iuzzini and Tom Douglas, all of whom are Macy’s Culinary Council Chefs.
A group of glass storage containers then caught my eye. I had just tossed out a group of plastic storage containers because I can never match them with lids. So I was happy to find these Martha Stewart containers that can go from the refrigerator to the freezer to the microwave.
I really like that the glass containers will look beautiful in the refrigerator. There will be less moving things around because I will be able to see what is inside without opening them. I may never use plastic again.
I finished my shopping by purchasing three other items. One is a stainless steel and silicone drain basket that will prevent excess food scraps from clogging my kitchen sink. The second was a group of magnetic measuring spoons that are so rad. The magnets hold the spoons together and there is one narrow set that fits into spice jars and the other is more round and fits into traditional containers. Best of all the magnets will hold themselves together on either the stove or refrigerator.
The last item was a digital scale, something I have never owned. It is compact and aesthetically looks as though it may have come from the Museum of Modern Art gift shop. I bought it because it has a timer, measures up to 11 pounds, and is great for portion control. I was drawn in by the proper portion control benefit. So we will see if I actually use it. But most importantly, these three items meet my requirements for a downsized kitchen and are aesthetically beautiful.
I spent a total of $111 on the five items each of which I believe will have a long shelf life. So in that respect, the cost per item seems reasonable.
I am a long time fan of Ming Tsai who merges his Chinese heritage with the best of French Cordon Bleu practices in his cooking; and I cannot wait to see what he prepares that day or for that matter how Marcus Samuelsson merges his Swedish and Ethiopion roots. In truth, the reputation of all these chefs precedes them and that is why they are Master Culinary Chefs.
So I will bring you up to date after I attend Macy’s 10th Culinary Anniversary on October 15th.

I love this list of things for the kitchen. Your argument for glass containers is persuasive – I’m already imagining an ability to actually see what’s in the fridge. What a concept!
I wish I could join you at Macy’s event. Alas, I’ll be here in Washington (DC), where we do indeed have a Macy’s — it’s a nice one, but a visit there is no match for a visit to Macy’s basement in NYC some decades ago. It was then by far the best place to buy anything relating to food. I recall strolling aisle by aisle, longing for treasure after treasure.
Have fun!

Hi Sienna
This particular group of glass storage containers cost $19.99. I put them to use today and they do look good. I grew up with plastic, and we reused plastic containers. We didn’t buy them specifically to hold left-overs but maintained the tradition of waste not. Now there are the types of plastic that simply should not be used at all and definitely not to warm anything. That is definitely a poo-poo. I am a convert now to glass. I will let you know about the food at the event Tuesday. Who would have ever thought that chefs would become sexy. Oh I know that is not what is important but it is always sexy when a man is creative and can also cook.
