I have lost 2 years of blog posts. A few weeks ago, I made a switch between website providers. Content was to be migrated. But in that process, all of my blog posts that were supposed to be migrated from the old provider to the new provide did not make it back. What’s more, there seems to be no way for me to retrieve that work. It just mysteriously disappeared. Now I have to move on. But I have learned my lesson in how not to lose blog content.
You ask me if it isn’t in the cloud. Well, it doesn’t seem so. If it is in the cloud somewhere, I cannot access it. So going forward, I clearly need better practices. Here’s what I should have done to ensure this never happens that I am sharing with you.
What Can You Do?
1. Make sure you have access to your C-panel. I really did not know that my host had disconnected my cpanel from original provider and connected it to his highly efficient provider somewhere else in the world. I continued to pay monthly payments to my provider, so it did no occur to me that the Cpanel was not connected.
2. Make sure you know where exactly your blog is being hosted.
3. Personally ensure that regular back ups are being conducted. Doesn’t matter that you don’t do them yourself, make sure whomever you are paying is doing them.
All of this knowledge is well and good after the fact. But I have got to move on. I have to remind myself I am not the first person to lose blog content.
It is not the end of the world but it sure sucks. Please learn from my mistake and take these points into consideration.
