In 1997 I was flying from Bamako, Mali to Accra, Ghana when I heard that the Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, had been killed when his plane was shot down. I did not have a clue about the history of the Hutus and Tutsis at the time. News from this part of the world never made the 6pm news and coverage had long been radio silent on Africa in the US. I could not fathom the depth of genocide that was happening in East Africa at this juncture.
This afternoon, I am joining Macy’s celebration of 10 years of the Rwandan Path to Peace program with a Commemorative Basket woven to represent 10 years of peace and prosperity.
I am especially interested in programs that economically benefit women and in learning more about how I can engage in trade by buying the baskets of these women. Building on a more than 150-year tradition, I also hope to better understand how the Macy’s Foundation is strengthening communities by supporting local and national charities and giving more than $70 million.
Do you prefer trade over charity or aid?
Follow me on IG and Facebook this evening to learn more and to enjoy the festivities.

i like to do trade when i can. sometimes aid is more appropriate. it all depends on my situation.

thanks Patricia for highlighting this worthwhile cause and story. Yes, peace can be championed and lives transformed through products and I love it. Oh how beautiful when business and art improve lives.
