I hosted the Dream Yourself Awake Retreat for the second year on Martha’s Vineyard this past summer and once again I have concluded the art of aging is really about your mindset. My experience has been that once you get focused on more than money and survival, the art of aging becomes the most important thing to occupy your mind. So I thought I’d start a list of hacks to help readers improve their skills on how to get this mindset together, how to keep it together, and how to live an artful life of aging.
The first hack is a book titled Life Reimagined: The Science, Art and Opportunity of Midlife by Barbara Bradley Hagerty. Midlife, according to Bradley Hagerty, is not about crisis but about renewal. Her argument is if we engage with verve, choose purpose over happiness and understand that our thinking is our experience, we will be able to live a life of renewal. I love it!!!!
Sounds easy, I know. But as someone who totally buys into this viewpoint, let me be the first to say I know it’s harder than it sounds. Yet, it is possible.
It’s an inside job, regardless of the obstacles and goblins that present themselves. Every bit of encouragement or guidance gleaned about our own limitations, new ways we can reframe our thinking, tools that help us manage our behavior, people or environments that uplift us will propel us closer to where we want to go. Let’s build a list that meets these requirements. Do you have any to share?
