I am of the food as medicine school rather than food as a place to gorge myself . I love the creative genius of a well trained chef, even a home chef. I read cookbooks. Whenever I travel, food is part of my pre-trip research as are places to hear good music. But given the scales today when I went for my doctor’s visit, I know I need to implement a practice to live what I say I believe.
This month I am going to give it the focus it deserves using the daily prompts of NaBloPoMo to help me get clear on where I am on nourishment. For the non-bloggers, I think NaBloPoMo stands for National Blog Posts Months. The goal is to write a blog post 5 days per week. Weekends are free. This month the daily prompts are about food and especially how to think about food as medicine.
So what is my eating pattern. How do I practice eating food as medicine? What I’d love to be able to say is I have a good head for sound nutrition. And that I do not think this necessarily requires me to become a vegan or a vegetarian. It does require me to do a better job than what I am currently doing which is guess-estimating how many calories I’ve eaten and winging it on food substitutions.
I have a very light breakfast usually consisting of coffee, maybe a boiled egg, slice of avocado or maybe just a smoothie. Late morning I usually have a cup oftea and maybe a piece of fruit because a late lunch is de rigeur. Late lunch might consist of falafel or turkey sandwich. All I can say is that if it is not left-overs, lunch is not well thought out. Although I think I’d do better with my meals if they were well planned in advance or if I had a personal chef a couple days per week. I just know I should eat breakfast by 7:15 for the best start for my metabolism. Lunch comes late because my first real break is generally not before 2:30 or 3pm. Then dinner may not come until 8:30 or 9 pm because that is when I am done with most Google Plus hangouts and I am exhausted. Bottom line is I do not usually sit down to 3 meals a day. What about you?
Tomorrow I will share how I wish I ate.
How do you manage your meals?
Rachee says
I am so all over with my meals! I need to plan them out so that I can have a little better control over what I am eating.
Patricia A Patton says
Rachee I have definitely found that even having a vague idea of what my meals will revolve around helps me keep it together.
Lynda @MommyPowers says
I’m trying to eat better and yes, food is medicine! It can either help us or harm us.
Patricia A Patton says
Me to lynda. It requires vigilance.

Thanks so much for reading.

i MUST have coffee for brekkies. does not matter whether it accompanies food or not. i love some sort of bread with my coffee. the rest of the day does not matter if i do not have my coffee in the AM. I also like a coffee around midday. So i guess my meals are coffee.
Patricia A Patton says
You crack me up PammyPam. The most recent study just determined however that 1-3 cups of coffee seems to be associated with longevity.
