Art Basel kicked off this week and I can’t wait to join the merrymakers already on the ground in South Beach. Miami temperatures are reportedly in the high 70’s to 80. This certainly beats the mild winter temperatures we are enjoying in the 40’s and 50’s here along the eastern seaboard. But given Hurricane Sandy, understand I am not complaining.
This will be my first time attending Art Basel although not going to South Beach. I always enjoy visiting South Beach. Even though I know it is not my real world, it never disappoints. It feels like the entry to South America. The general vibe is that of a young female spirit in a mixing pot society that decidedly moves to something other than a 4/4 rhythm. The culinary options appeal to my taste. There are a lot of physically beautiful people. The town feels young. And the people in town are generally in a good mood. Maybe it is because they don’t live there and are living a fantasy vacay.
I realize this is an escape. The focus of my trip will be Art Basel, an international event that will bring people in from around the world. The website describes Art Basel as “Defined by its host city and region, each show is unique, which is reflected in its participating galleries, the artworks on display and the parallel content programming produced in collaboration with the local institutions.” Social Miami will offer the traditionally organized and sponsored events, meaning these events follow the established money trail. Then there will be an alternative (for some) guide. It is the one I will primarily follow which is the AfriPolitan’s Guide. It features some events outside of the South Beach area with artists who might not be represented by the traditional participating galleries but they are masters at what they do.
To recap my 5 reasons are:
1. The town feels like the entry to South America and moves to something other than a 4/4 rhythm.
2. I love the food. The culinary options appeal to my taste.
3. There are many physically beautiful people.
4. The town feels young. And the people in town are generally in a good mood. Maybe it is because they don’t live there and are living a fantasy vacay.
5. I am always amused by the fake high living.
I will try instagraming my impressions. So if you have not already downloaded the instagram app from the Apple Store, please do and follow me at BoomerWiz.
