October is Healthy Lung Month, which is a great time to be aware of our lung health as we grow older and symptoms that might mean a more serious disease, like idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).
IPF affects approximately 100,000 people in the United States. Yet, like many people, I had never heard of this disease until recently. It is, unfortunately, an irreversible lung disease that often goes untreated because it is often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed as asthma or COPD.
This disease has no known cause and involves a progressive loss of the lung’s ability to transport oxygen to the bloodstream as a result of permanent scarring or fibrosis, which makes breathing difficult.
People with IPF often experience a dry cough and shortness of breath. Another sign of IPF are crackling, Velcro®-like sounds at the bases of the lungs, which a doctor can hear.
Options to manage IPF include FDA-approved IPF-specific treatments, pulmonary rehabilitation, oxygen therapy and clinical trial involvement. Even though IPF is an incurable disease, we all seek to have the best life for as long as there is life. To learn more about the disease visit the website here
